How Arkansas Medicaid Works for Long-Term Care

Medicaid and Medicare are separate programs. Medicare is federal health insurance tied primarily to age and work history. Medicaid is a joint federal-state program based on financial need, administered in Arkansas by the Department of Human Services.

For long-term care, Medicaid can cover nursing home and certain assisted living costs once a person meets both financial and functional eligibility requirements. Without planning, the cost of that care can exceed a family’s income and push them to spend down accumulated savings before benefits begin. That spend-down pressure is where proactive Medicaid planning can make the most difference.

Arkansans can apply for Medicaid online, through the Health Insurance Marketplace, or in person at their county DHS office. A relative or trusted friend may apply on behalf of someone who can’t do so independently.
